Films from the 1940's to the 1960's that feature suitcases, in doing so, document a period when industrial designers were able to work imaginatively and produce designs that were novel, recognizable and distinctive. These suitcases performed at that time a similar function to hats and clothing, in the sense that they conveyed or implied information about the owners taste, class and general sensibility. In modern times the suitcase, like some other forms of industrial design, has tended to express functionality, and no longer has an easily or so often identifiable role as a medium for aesthetic or decorative expression.
